Checking Transmission Fluid: Step-by-Step Guide

These are the steps to take to check your transmission fluid and keep your Chrysler running in top-condition around Douglas County:

  1. Start your vehicle to warm up the engine and leave it running for a few minutes before checking your transmission fluid. Then, put your car in park, and set the parking brake before opening the hood.
  2. Locate the transmission fluid dipstick. Usually, on front-wheel-drive vehicles, it’s found to the right of the oil dipstick. If you can’t find it, check your owner’s manual.
  3. Remove the dipstick and touch the fluid. Move it around between your thumb and first finger. It should be mostly clear in appearance with a light pink hue. If the fluid looks dirty or gives off a burnt odor, it’s time to replace your transmission fluid.
  4. Using an old rag, wipe off the dipstick and then insert it back into your Jeep. Pull it out again and check the fluid level. If it is below the “Full” mark, you need to add more transmission fluid.
  5. Use a funnel to add fluid carefully. Don’t overfill it!

How to Check the Fluid in a Sealed Transmission

If you can’t locate your dipstick anywhere, your vehicle is likely equipped with a sealed transmission, which is standard on cars with a CVT. If you’ve never heard of a sealed transmission, you’re not alone. Sealed doesn’t mean you can’t access it, but it does mean there’s no dipstick to measure the level of your transmission fluid. If your RAM truck has a sealed transmission, don’t even try to check its fluid level because you could unintentionally damage your vehicle by attempting it. The service team at Scott Evans Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram will inspect your transmission fluid level when you bring your vehicle in for service.

When to Check the Fluid in a Sealed Transmission

The objective of a sealed transmission is to lessen the volume of wasted transmission fluid, which saves you money. Still, issues can occur, and if so, replacing the transmission fluid is necessary. Watch for these potential warning signs, which could signify a problem with the sealed transmission in your vehicle:

  • You hear odd noises when the gears shift.
  • The gears hesitate slightly before changing.
  • During acceleration, there’s a brief delay when the gears shift.
  • Your transmission warning indicator or check engine light comes on while you’re driving.

How Often Do You Check Your Transmission Fluid?

If you want to know, “How often do you check your transmission fluid?” check all the primary fluid levels in your car once a month. This includes your transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and engine oil. Look in your owner’s manual for a more specific maintenance schedule for your car make and model.
