Learn How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car

Certain newer vehicles in Douglas County have electronic oil monitors that don’t use traditional dipsticks, so we suggest that the first step in how to check car oil is to check your owner’s manual. If you’re checking the oil with the dipstick, we suggest you follow these steps:

  1. Ensure that the vehicle is parked on level ground and you have a fully off, fully cold engine.
  2. Open the vehicle’s hood and find the dipstick.
  3. Pull the dipstick from the engine and wipe off any oil that’s on the end.
  4. Re-insert the dipstick all the way back into its tube, then pull it out and take a look at both sides to see where the level is.

Your dipstick will have some way of showing you what the right level is. Typically, it’s going to be the area between two marks or a cross-hatched area. If the oil is in this zone, your oil level is good. If it isn’t, you’ll need to fill it with more oil. Be sure to buy the grade that your owner’s manual recommends, remove the oil filter cap, then add oil a little at a time, re-checking until you have the proper level.
